Minutes of the fourth meeting of the Tri-State chapter
held on November 10, 1996 at Sam Liebowitz's apartment

  • Introductions
    • Welcomed new members and guests
      • new members: Lee Maclin, Greg zsidisin
      • guests: Pamela White, Edward Aarons
    • Listened to their background information

  • Updates from Rifle
    • Richard Crews is actively searching out $500,000.00 in grant money for a mariculture research project
    • Phil Kopitske is doing work on a shore based OTEC design which may be commercially profitable
      • Fresh water would be one of the first commodities to be sold for profit.
      • Initial cost estimates are $20 - 30 million
    • Serious discussion is currently ongoing for building AR from off the shelf commercially available components
    • Phil Hardy is hard at work putting together a database of all FMF Core and Cladding members
      • this database is designed to allow different gemstars in the foundation to have access to member information to aid in better lines of communications
      • This also takes some of the burden off of Rifle because we know how busy they must be right now.
    • The welcome wagon is beginning to gain momentum as more people are offering help with outreach
      • The welcome wagon's main goal is to answer any inquiries from new members and help them come up to speed with the workings of the foundation
      • It is also designed to encourage non-members to join

  • Questions from our guests
    • Question: What is the purpose of the Tri-State chapter?
      • Answer: To bring the FMF out to the general public and grow the foundation
  • LBC idea explained to guests
  • Future plans for outreach and expansion
    • There are several groups which we plan on visiting and giving talks about the FMF and the Tri-State Chapter
    • This list includes:
      • College students
      • Libertarians
      • Sierra Club
      • Engineering groups
      • Space (NASA) people
      • Friends and family

  • New Business
    • The project to build an OTEC model has been changed to a 3D computer model which can be drawn using a cad program
    • Cell Tech Fund Raiser proposed
    • Discussion of future plans to split the Tri-State chapter into three smaller chapters:
    • Ed Nash has taken on a seament project to try to grow some small objects from ocean water
      • Progress report expected for March meeting
    • Cadcam project to model OTEC is under way

  • Upcoming meeting schedules
    • Next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, December 8, 1996 place to be announced soon.
    • Next meeting is planned as more of a Christmas party type social event than an actual meeting so brings your friends and your party hats.
